Jebel Akhdar

Jebel Akhdar, the green mountain, rises to over 2,000 metres in the Hajar range, and the name refers not to forest but to what grows on its terraces. The altitude gives a climate that supports pomegranates, apricots, walnuts and, most famously, damask roses, which are picked in spring and distilled into rosewater in village stills. Stone terraces climb the slopes, fed by falaj channels running along the contours, and the villages of Wadi Bani Habib sit half-abandoned in the valley below, their stone houses collapsing into the orchards. A ledge walk known as the Balcony Walk runs along a cliff face between villages, one of the finest short hikes in the country. Nights up here are genuinely cold.

History

Rock art sites in the area hold figures dating back about 6,000 years. In August 2011 a decree made Jebel Akhdar a nature reserve, the Jebel Akhdar Sanctuary for Natural Sceneries, the same year the mountain became the main climb of the Tour of Oman cycle race, and in 2025 UNESCO designated it a biosphere reserve (Wikipedia, Jebel Akhdar (Oman)).

When to go

October to April for comfortable temperatures; the rose harvest runs roughly late March into April and is the best time to be here. Winter nights drop close to freezing and there is occasional snow.

What to expect

Access requires a genuine four-wheel drive and this is enforced at a police checkpoint on the road up; two-wheel-drive cars are turned back, which strands people who booked accommodation on the mountain. The Balcony Walk is exposed with unfenced drops. Accommodation on the plateau is limited and expensive, weighted towards luxury resorts.
