Furebergfossen

Furebergfossen comes off the Folgefonna plateau and falls about a hundred and fifty metres in a series of steps down the mountainside to the Maurangerfjord, and the coastal road passes directly across its foot on a short bridge, which is unusual enough that the waterfall has become one of the landmarks of the Hardanger region. There is a lay-by on the fjord side with room for a few cars and a view straight up the fall. Spray drifts across the road in high water. The setting is a narrow shelf between the mountain and the water, with the Bondhusdalen valley and the Folgefonna arms a short drive further on, and the road continues around toward Rosendal and its manor house.

What you actually see

• The stepped fall - water dropping the mountainside in stages to the fjord.
• The road bridge - the highway crossing directly at the waterfall's base.
• The spray zone - mist across the road when the flow is high.
• The fjord setting - the Maurangerfjord immediately below.

When to go

May to July for the strongest flow from snowmelt; by late summer it thins considerably. Any clear day works for a roadside stop, and the fall is floodlit at night in some seasons.

Honest expectations

This is a five-minute stop, not a destination, with parking for only a handful of cars in a lay-by beside a road with fast traffic. Spray makes the surface slippery. There are no facilities.

Bondhusvatnet and the Folgefonna arms are a short drive on; Rosendal manor lies west along the fjord.
