The Cousteau Reserve

Off Malendure's dark-sand beach, the twin Pigeon Islets anchor the marine reserve that carries Jacques Cousteau's name - the captain filmed here and called the waters among the world's best, and the protection that followed kept the case strong: coral gardens on the islets' flanks graze-marked by hawksbill turtles, trumpetfish and angelfish in aquarium densities, and for divers a bronze Cousteau bust at depth, polished bright by decades of gloved salutes. Glass-bottom boats serve the reluctant, kayaks cross from the beach for the sporting, and Bouillante's hot springs steam into the sea just down the coast.

When to go

December to May for the calmest, clearest water; mornings beat both wind and the boat rush. The reserve works year round - summer adds warmth and the odd shower.

Honest expectations

Malendure is busy - this is Guadeloupe's most-visited snorkel site, and midday can feel like a regatta; early starts or late afternoons restore the magic. Reserve rules (no touching, no feeding, no anchoring) are enforced and correct. Kayak crossings need honest arm assessment against the channel breeze.
