Victoria

Victoria is the main settlement of Saint Mark, the smallest parish in Grenada, strung along the west coast road below the bulk of Mount St. Catherine with the sea on one side and the mountain rising behind. It is a working fishing and farming town rather than a resort, and it is the place trips into the northwestern interior are arranged from, including the walk to Tufton Hall. The road north from here runs on to Sauteurs and the top of the island.

History

The original inhabitants of the area were the Kalinago, who left petroglyphs and rock art at Waltham and Duquesne. The French arrived in Saint Mark in the 1670s, founded the town of Victoria around 1721, and made it a new parish in 1741; most of its architecture dates from the mid-to-late 1800s (Wikipedia, Victoria, Grenada).

When to go

Year round. January to May is drier for the interior walks arranged here. Fishing activity is heaviest in the early morning.

Things to know

There is little in the town for a visitor and it works as a base. Accommodation is very limited. The chocolate factory is the main formal attraction.
