Bathway is on Grenada's Atlantic coast where the surf comes in hard, but a natural reef ledge runs parallel to the shore a short way out and holds back the swell, leaving a strip of calm water inside it that people swim in like a pool. Beyond the ledge the current is dangerous. The beach is long, backed by sea grape, and busy with Grenadians at weekends rather than visitors.

What you actually see

  • The reef ledge - the natural barrier holding the swell off the shore.
  • The calm strip - the protected water inside the ledge.
  • The Atlantic surf - the swell breaking on the reef beyond.
  • The sea grape - the vegetation running along the back of the beach.

When to go

December to May is drier and calmer. Weekends bring local crowds. Swell in any season makes the water beyond the reef dangerous.

Honest expectations

Swimming beyond the reef ledge is genuinely dangerous and there have been drownings. Facilities are basic and there is no lifeguard most of the time. The beach is coarse sand rather than the fine sand of the west coast.

Nearby

Levera is east, and Sauteurs is west.
