Robertsport

Between Lake Piso and the open Atlantic, Robertsport earned its whispered reputation one wave at a time: a series of left-hand point breaks - Cotton Trees, Fisherman's Point and company - peel with a consistency that surf filmmakers eventually could not keep quiet about, breaking under literal cotton trees where surfboards lean against buttress roots. The town behind is a faded trading port of zinc roofs and old mission buildings, the beach culture runs on camps, grilled fish and driftwood fires, and local surfers - a homegrown scene now with boards and champions of its own - share the lineup with the travellers who make the pilgrimage.

History

The town is named after Joseph Jenkins Roberts, first president of Liberia. In the mid-15th century the Portuguese navigator Pedro de Sintra reached the cape, a granite headland 1,000 feet high, and named it Cabo do Monte, Cape Mount (Wikipedia, Robertsport).

When to go

Surf pumps biggest in the rainy months, May to October, for experienced boards; November to April trades size for sunshine, cleaner camps and gentler learning waves. Either way, swell rarely vanishes entirely.

Facilities are surf camps and simple guesthouses - solar power, bucket showers, menus by the day's catch; the road in deteriorates with the rains. Currents demand respect beyond the known breaks - local knowledge is the safety system. Cash and self-sufficiency carry the weekend.
