Lake Piso

Behind Robertsport's surf, Liberia's largest lake spreads its tidal sheet between forested hills and the Cape Mount peninsula - an open lagoon where Vai fishing villages work seine nets and basket traps as they long have, mangrove edges hide herons, kingfishers and the occasional crocodile, and sandbar islands surface for picnics at the right tides. Canoe trips from the lakeside villages run the classic circuit: net-hauling to watch or join, birdlife along the green margins, and the broad, calm water making its case as the flat-water counterpart to the ocean's show over the dunes.

History

The lake overflowed its banks at least twice in 1998: in August, when the narrow inlet linking it to the Atlantic was blocked, and again after heavy rains in September and October (Wikipedia, Lake Piso).

Trips are informal village arrangements - agree scope and price at the canoe, and life jackets are a bring-your-own concept. Bilharzia caution applies to still tropical water; most visitors boat rather than swim. It is a half-day of gentle authenticity, best stapled to a Robertsport weekend.
