Off Cambodia's southern coast lie its finest tropical islands, Koh Rong and its quieter, more laid-back neighbour Koh Rong Sanloem, fringed with long, powder-white beaches, jungle interiors and warm turquoise water. Ranging from lively backpacker beaches to serene, near-deserted bays, they are a place to swim, snorkel and unwind, and are famous for the magical bioluminescent plankton that light up the sea with a blue glow on dark nights.

When to go
November to April, the dry season, for the calmest seas and sunniest weather; the wet season brings rougher crossings and rain. The bioluminescent plankton glow best on dark, moonless nights.

Koh Rong's main beach has a lively party reputation, while Koh Rong Sanloem is far quieter, so choose to match your mood. Facilities are simple, with limited electricity and internet on parts of the islands, which is either charming or challenging. Ferry crossings depend on the weather. The bioluminescence is magical but not guaranteed.
