The Ha'apai Islands

When to go

May to October, the cooler, drier season, for the best weather and calmest seas, overlapping with the humpback whale season; the wet season from November to April is hotter with a cyclone risk. The islands are reached by a small flight or a long ferry from the main island of Tongatapu.

Ha'apai is genuinely remote and undeveloped, with very basic facilities, simple beach lodges, limited services and infrequent, sometimes unreliable, transport, so it suits travellers seeking true, unplugged island tranquillity rather than any comfort, nightlife or activities beyond nature; it is a place to do very little.
