The Ha'apai Islands

The Ha'apai group, a scattering of low coral islands in the heart of Tonga, is one of the most remote, pristine and tranquil island destinations in the entire South Pacific, a true castaway escape. When to go

May to October, the cooler, drier season, for the best weather and calmest seas, overlapping with the humpback whale season; the wet season from November to April is hotter with a cyclone risk. The islands are reached by a small flight or a long ferry from the main island of Tongatapu.

Ha'apai is genuinely remote and undeveloped, with very basic facilities, simple beach lodges, limited services and infrequent, sometimes unreliable, transport, so it suits travellers seeking true, unplugged island tranquillity rather than any comfort, nightlife or activities beyond nature; it is a place to do very little. For the reward of some of the most pristine, empty and beautiful castaway islands in the South Pacific, though, in glorious peace, Ha'apai is a rare and magical escape.
