The Lapaha Royal Tombs

At Mu'a, capital of the Tu'i Tonga dynasty for centuries, Polynesia built its most monumental royal necropolis: the langi - stepped terrace tombs faced with quarried coral-stone slabs, some enormous and fitted with precision that still puzzles - rising in grassy tiers where sacred kings were laid from the medieval period onward. More than twenty langi spread through the village and lagoon shore, Paepae 'o Tele'a the celebrated masterwork among them, and the ensemble marks the seat of an influence that once reached across the central Pacific. Burials of the royal line continue in adjacent ground, keeping the site living dynastic heritage rather than ruin.

Any dry-season day; low light models the terraces best. Visits are informal - a local guide or arranged tour adds the dynastic story the unlabelled stones withhold.

What to expect

The tombs sit unfenced amid village life - grazing horses included - which is either the charm or the shock depending on expectations; interpretation on site is nearly absent. These are sacred royal graves: walk respectfully, climb nothing, and photograph with tact.
