Belintash

Belintash is a long sandstone ridge standing above the forest in the Rhodopes south of Asenovgrad, with a flat top about three hundred metres long whose surface is cut with channels, basins, steps, sockets and a broad shallow bowl, worked over a long period and generally understood as a Thracian sanctuary, though the details of its use are argued about. Cliffs fall away on both sides and the view runs over ridges of forest in every direction. It attracts a substantial esoteric following in Bulgaria, with claims about energy and extraterrestrials attached to it, which affects the atmosphere at weekends. The approach is a mountain road and then a walk of about twenty minutes, with a short scramble onto the rock.

What you actually see

• Cut channels and basins - the worked surface across the plateau top.
• A three-hundred-metre ridge - cliffs falling away on both sides.
• The forest ridge view - Rhodope country in every direction.
• Steps and sockets - the cuttings whose purpose is still argued.

When to go

May to October; the mountain road is difficult in winter. Half a day including the drive. Weekends bring both walkers and esoteric gatherings. Sunrise and sunset are the busiest hours.

Honest expectations

The road up is rough and slow. The rock top is exposed with drops and no barriers. Weekend crowds and their gatherings change the character considerably. There are no facilities and litter is a problem.
