Ha'amonga 'a Maui

At Tongatapu's eastern end stands Polynesia's most imposing megalith: Ha'amonga 'a Maui - 'the burden of Maui' - a trilithon of coral limestone whose uprights, each some 30-40 tonnes, carry a mortised lintel in a feat of engineering dated to about 1200 AD, in the reign of the Tu'i Tonga Tuitatui. Tradition reads it as the gateway to the ancient royal compound of Heketa, with the nearby 'esi maka faakinanga - the king's stone backrest - completing the ensemble; modern lore adds solstice alignments that draw dawn visitors in June. Whatever blend of gateway, calendar and dynastic statement it was, it remains the Pacific's answer to Stonehenge, standing in casual grandeur by the island road.

When to go

Any dry-season day; early morning gives soft light and solitude, and the June solstice dawn draws its small crowd of alignment-watchers. Pair with the east coast's beaches and Captain Cook landing sites.

Honest expectations

It is a single monumental structure in a mowed clearing - profound or underwhelming depending on the history you bring; reading the Tu'i Tonga story first (or a guide's telling) makes the difference. Facilities are minimal. Respect it as royal heritage, not a climbing frame.
