The Merry Cemetery of Săpânța

In 1935 a local woodcarver named Stan Ioan Pătraș began making grave markers unlike anyone else's: tall oak crosses painted a particular deep blue, each carrying a naive painted picture of the dead person at their work or their pleasure, and beneath it a short verse in the first person, in local dialect, telling their story with startling frankness and often with jokes. The habit stuck, his apprentice carried it on after his death, and the cemetery at Săpânța now holds hundreds of them ranked in rows around the church, a crowd of little painted lives: shepherds, weavers, soldiers, a man who liked to drink, a woman who did not like her mother-in-law. The result is not morbid at all but affectionate and very funny, and it says something particular about how this corner of Maramureș regards death.

When to go

May to September gives the best light on the colours and the easiest travel in this remote corner; the cemetery is open year-round. Mornings are quiet before tour groups arrive from Sighetu. A little translation of the verses, from a guide or a leaflet, transforms the visit.

Honest expectations

The verses are the whole point and they are in Romanian dialect, so without a translation you are looking at pretty carvings and missing the wit that makes the place famous; bring a guide, a printed translation or a translation app. Săpânța is remote, in the far north near the border, and reaching it means a long drive. It is a working cemetery where families still bury their dead, so quiet respect is due alongside the enjoyment.
