Lovoni Village

Lovoni sits inside the crater of the extinct volcano that forms the island of Ovalau, reached by a road that climbs over the rim from Levuka and drops into the caldera. The Lovoni people held out against outside control longer than most, and the village keeps a strong sense of that history, which the guided village tour covers along with the site of the old hill fort above. The crater floor is farmed and the walls rise steeply all around it.

When to go

May to October is the drier season and the best for the road. The wet season makes the rim road difficult. Village tours are arranged in Levuka or at the village.

Honest expectations

The road over the rim is steep and rough and most visitors go by carrier truck from Levuka. Visits run through the village with a fee and sevusevu. The village tour is the point; there is little else laid on.

Levuka is over the rim on the coast, and the Ovalau ferry runs to Viti Levu.
