Fulaga Lagoon

Fulaga lies in the far south of the Lau group, a ring of limestone around a lagoon full of small undercut islets and white sandbars, entered through a pass that is only workable at the right state of the tide. The three villages on the island are known across Fiji for woodcarving, particularly bowls and drua models made from vesi. Yachts that make it in present sevusevu to the council and are then assigned a host family, an arrangement the island has kept for decades.

When to go

May to October is the cruising season and the drier weather. The pass requires slack water and good light. Cyclone season from November to April clears the lagoon entirely.

Things to know

This is one of the hardest places in Fiji to reach: essentially yacht-only, with flights irregular and no accommodation. The sevusevu and host family arrangement is the island's own system and it must be followed. There are no shops or services of any kind.
