Fijian Village Culture

Beyond its beaches, the true soul of Fiji lies in its villages and the warmth of its people, whose traditions remain a living part of daily life. Central to village culture is the ceremony of kava, or yaqona, the mildly relaxing drink made from a pepper root, shared from a communal bowl in a ritual of welcome and community. Visitors are greeted with a stirring meke, the traditional song and dance recounting legends, and honoured with a lovo, a feast of meat and vegetables slow-cooked in an earth oven.

Some resort-arranged cultural shows can feel staged or touristy, so a genuine, respectfully arranged village visit is far more rewarding and authentic. Etiquette matters: modest dress, removing hats, and presenting a sevusevu gift of kava are expected.
