Tvoroyri

Tvøroyri grew from the 1830s when the Danish trade monopoly ended and merchants set up on the Trongisvágsfjørður, and the town keeps a run of nineteenth-century timber warehouses and merchant houses along the water from that period. Its church was built in Norway in 1907, shipped over in pieces and re-erected here. The town is the main centre of northern Suðuroy and the ferry from Tórshavn lands nearby. Suduroy is the most remote of the main islands and has a character of its own, less visited and more industrial than the north, and Tvoroyri is where that shows most clearly.

Background

Tvøroyri lies on the north shore of the Trongisvágsfjørður and, with Froðba, Trongisvágur, Líðin and Øravík, makes up Tvøroyri Municipality. Its founding is dated to 1836, the year the Royal Danish Monopoly Trade Store opened on a small spit of land called Tvøroyri. The monopoly kept a branch here until 1856 and built the old houses of the area. After its abolition, private firms moved in and the village grew quickly. Around the turn of the 20th century it ranked among the largest towns in the islands, with a major fishing industry. A large fillet factory began production in 1975, and TB, founded in 1892, was the first football club in the Faroe Islands.

May to September is the season. The ferry runs year round but crossings are rough in winter. Fog is common on Suduroy.

The two-hour ferry each way makes a day trip tight. The town is workaday with limited facilities for visitors. Many of the historic buildings are private.
