Vágur sits at the head of Vágsfjørður on the southern part of Suðuroy, a fishing town that grew on the salt cod trade and still works the sea. It has an outdoor swimming pool built into the rock beside the water, a church begun in 1927 and consecrated in 1939, and a set of walking routes into the hills behind. The road west from here climbs towards the great cliffs of the island's Atlantic side. The fjord was one of the safer anchorages in the south and the town grew on it, with the houses climbing both sides of the water above the quay.

What you actually see

  • The rock swimming pool - an outdoor pool built into the shore.
  • The fjord - the long inlet running inland from the sea.
  • The 1939 church - the town's main church above the harbour, begun in 1927.
  • The hill paths - routes into the moorland behind the town.

When to go

May to September is the season. The outdoor pool operates in summer only. Winter storms hit the fjord hard.

Honest expectations

The town is a working port with limited visitor facilities. The pool is unheated and the water is cold. Suduroy is a long ferry from the capital.

Nearby

Famjin is northwest, and Sumba is south.
