Getting thereScheduled helicopter only; boat landings are rare and difficult
EntryHelicopter charged; visits by arrangement

Stóra Dímun is a block of rock with cliffs on every side and a green top, and one family farms it, running sheep and cattle on the plateau. For centuries the only way up was a rope and a chain up the cliff; the public helicopter now lands three times a week in summer, which is how almost everyone arrives. The island has a church, one farmhouse and no road, shop or harbour of any kind.

What you actually see

  • The single farm - one family working sheep and cattle on the plateau.
  • The cliff approach - the rope and chain route that was once the only access.
  • The helicopter landing - the public service that now serves the island.
  • The plateau - the green top above cliffs on every side.

When to go

June to August is the practical window. Helicopter seats are very limited and must be booked well ahead. Weather cancels flights regularly.

Honest expectations

Access is by helicopter with a handful of seats a week; visits need arranging with the family in advance. There is no accommodation, shop or facility of any kind. Being weathered in is a real possibility.
