Husavik

Húsavík lies on the eastern side of Sandoy in a green valley running down to a bay, and its interest is the ruins above the village: a substantial medieval farmstead associated with Guðrun Sjúrðardóttir, a landowner of the fourteenth century who appears in Faroese tradition as an unusually powerful woman with holdings across the islands. Stone foundations of the hall and outbuildings remain, along with a later restored farmhouse. The bay below was a landing place for centuries and the old boat houses still stand along the shore, though the fishing that used them has long gone.

When to go

May to September is the season. The heritage buildings keep short summer hours. Winter is very quiet on Sandoy.

The remains are low foundations with little interpretation. Opening of the restored buildings is seasonal and limited. The village has almost no facilities.
