Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary
Eswatini's oldest reserve, on foot and by bicycle - zebra and wildebeest grazing metres from the trail, Execution Rock above, hippos at the rest camp.

Mlilwane began Eswatini's conservation story in the 1960s, and it offers what the big predator parks cannot: freedom to move under your own power. With no lions or elephants in this southern section, visitors walk, cycle and ride horses among zebra, wildebeest, impala and warthog that graze the old farmland plains with unbothered ease - wildlife at eye level and walking pace. Nyonyane's granite peak, remembered as Execution Rock from royal-era justice, rises over the plains for a stiff summit hike, hippos grumble in the dam beside the main camp where warthogs doze by the fire circle, and the Ezulwini Valley's craft and culture stops sit minutes away.
What you actually see
- Wildlife on foot - zebra and wildebeest at walking-trail distance.
- Nyonyane summit - the Execution Rock hike above the plains.
- The rest-camp hippos - the dam's residents at dusk.
- Cycling the plains - game viewing by bicycle on the flat loops.
When to go
April to September gives dry, cool days with grass low enough for easy spotting; winter dawns are frosty and golden. Summer is green, hot and stormy in the afternoons. Weekends bring regional visitors; midweek is quietest.
Honest expectations
This is a gentle sanctuary of plains game, not a Big Five park - adjust expectations toward intimacy, not drama. Animals are wild all the same: give hippos and the crater-faced warthogs their space, especially around camp. The main camp is rustic and beloved rather than luxurious; the valley's hotels sit nearby for those wanting more thread count.
Nearby
Lobamba's royal and museum quarter, Mantenga Falls and the Ezulwini craft markets.
