Al-Muharraq Monastery

Deir al-Muharraq stands at the foot of the western desert escarpment near Al-Qusiya, and Coptic tradition places it at the furthest south the Holy Family travelled, holding that they stayed here for around six months, which makes it one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the Egyptian church. The oldest building is the church of the Virgin, a low structure whose altar stone is venerated as the bed on which the child slept, with a keep tower beside it of the type built across Egypt for refuge. A large modern cathedral now stands alongside for the crowds. The monastery is a substantial working community with a seminary, farmland and several hundred residents. The annual feast in June brings very large numbers of pilgrims.

When to go

October to April for a quiet visit; the June feast is the largest gathering and completely different in character. Two hours. Visits during Coptic fasts may be restricted, so check before travelling.

Honest expectations

This is a working monastery and access depends on the community; parts are closed to visitors. Photography inside the old church is generally not allowed. Modest dress required. Asyut region travel sometimes involves escort arrangements that limit flexibility.
