Kopacki Rit Nature Park
A vast Danube and Drava floodplain in eastern Croatia, with seasonal lakes, flooded oak forest and one of Europe's densest breeding bird populations.

Kopacki rit is what a large European river looked like before engineering: a floodplain where the Danube backs up into the Drava and spreads across a maze of channels, seasonal lakes and flooded oak and willow forest. The water level moves by metres through the year, and the whole ecology follows it. Herons, cormorants, spoonbills and white tailed eagles breed here in numbers, storks nest on the village houses at the edge, and red deer and wild boar move through the woods. Visits work best from a boat, which the park runs on a schedule, with boardwalks and an information centre for those staying on foot.
What you actually see
- The boat trip - a scheduled run out onto the flooded channels, the only way to see the interior properly.
- The boardwalks - raised timber paths through willow and oak floodplain forest near the entrance.
- Breeding colonies - heron, cormorant and spoonbill colonies in the trees, visible from the water in spring.
- White tailed eagles - a substantial resident population, regularly seen over the open water.
When to go
Spring for breeding birds and high water, autumn for deer, colour and fewer insects. High water in spring can close parts of the park and reroute boats, while a dry late summer can leave channels too shallow to run trips at all. Morning and late afternoon are the productive hours for wildlife. Check boat departure times in advance.
Honest expectations
Mosquitoes here are a serious problem from late spring through summer and repellent is not optional. Flooding closes trails and cancels boats with little warning, and low water does the same for different reasons. The birdwatching is genuinely good but requires binoculars and patience; casual visitors on a short boat trip often see less than they hoped.
Nearby
Osijek and its riverside fortress quarter are twenty minutes away, and the Baranja wine hills lie north.
