Osijek's zoo occupies a large piece of ground on the left bank of the Drava, directly opposite the city, and getting there is part of the visit: either across the white pedestrian suspension bridge or, in season, on the small passenger ferry that has crossed the river here for generations. It is the largest zoo in the country by area, which shows in enclosure sizes for the hoofed animals and big cats, and it includes an aquarium and terrarium section housed separately. The setting is flat riverside woodland, so the paths are easy and shaded. It sits beside the flood forests that lead on towards the Kopacki rit wetland.

What you actually see

  • The large enclosures - space for hoofed animals and big cats that most Croatian collections cannot offer.
  • The aquarium and terrarium - an indoor section with freshwater fish and reptiles, ticketed with the zoo.
  • The Drava crossing - the pedestrian suspension bridge or the small ferry that connects the zoo to the city.
  • The riverside woodland - flat shaded paths through floodplain forest on the zoo side of the river.

When to go

April to October, when everything is open and the animals are outside. Morning is the active period, especially in summer heat, when much of the collection sleeps through the afternoon. The ferry runs only in the warmer months; outside that the bridge is the route. Weekends and school holidays are busy with local families.

Honest expectations

Some enclosures are dated and smaller than the overall size of the zoo suggests, and the standard varies considerably between sections. Slavonian summers are hot and humid and the animals go quiet by midday. Mosquitoes from the river are a nuisance in the evening. Signage is limited in English, and food options on site are basic.

Nearby

Osijek's fortress quarter is across the bridge, and Kopacki rit nature park is twenty minutes north.
