Karanac

Karanac is a single long street village in Baranja, the flat farmland between the Drava and the Danube, and over the last few decades a number of households have opened their yards, barns and collections to visitors - old ploughs and carts, a smithy, a bakery oven, a school room, a wine cellar - so that the effect is an ethno village made by the people who live in it rather than assembled on a museum site. The area is ethnically mixed, with Croatian, Hungarian, German and Serbian traditions in the same street, and the food follows: paprika-heavy Baranja cooking, fish paprikas from the Danube, and the local wine.

Things to know

Collections are private and open on request or by arrangement, so turning up unannounced can find doors shut. The village is flat, plain farmland - the appeal is the interiors and the food. Restaurants need booking at weekends.
