Around five thousand years ago a settlement on this bank of the Danube was producing pottery, early copper metallurgy and one of the most recognisable objects in Croatian archaeology, a ceramic bird-shaped vessel that has since become a national emblem. The museum, opened in 2015, is built into the slope directly above the excavation: a chain of concrete rooms stepping down the hillside, lit from one side, with the finds arranged as a sequence rather than by category. It covers how the people here smelted and cast copper, what they buried, what they ate and how they marked the year. Outside, the dig itself and the river are part of the visit.

What you actually see

  • The bird vessel - the Vučedol dove, the culture's best-known ceramic form and its emblem.
  • The metallurgy rooms - moulds, crucibles and cast copper axes from an early European casting centre.
  • The building - a stepped concrete structure sunk into the hillside above the excavation.
  • The excavation terrace - the dig site outside and a view along the Danube from the slope.

When to go

April to October, when the Danube bank is green and the outdoor part of the site is worth walking. The museum stays open year-round but the terrace and dig are bleak in winter fog. Allow two hours inside, since the display is denser than it first appears. Weekdays outside the school trip season are quiet.

Honest expectations

It is out of the way, and reaching it without a car means a taxi from Vukovar. The architecture is dramatic but the lighting is deliberately low and reading the panels for two hours is tiring. A great deal of what is shown is pottery fragments, so anyone indifferent to prehistory will find it long. Some of the culture's most famous originals are held in museums elsewhere.

Nearby

The Danube bank and the wine villages around Ilok are half an hour downstream.
