Bahrain Fort Museum

Beside the tell of Qal'at al-Bahrain, where excavation revealed layer upon layer of settlement going back to the Dilmun civilisation of the third millennium BCE, a low museum was built partly into the ground so as not to compete with the site. Inside, five halls run through Bahrain's long story as a harbour and trading centre between Mesopotamia and the Indus - seals, pottery, copper, burial goods and the famous Dilmun stamp seals that turn up as far away as India. A glass wall looks out onto the tell itself, which is the point: the objects and the ground they came from in one view.

What to look for

• The Dilmun collections - seals, pottery and trade goods from the tell.
• The window onto the site - the glass wall facing the excavated fort.
• Qal'at al-Bahrain itself - the layered fort and settlement mound outside.
• Sunset over the fort - the sea-facing walls in evening light.

When to go

The cool season from November to March is comfortable for combining the museum with the outdoor site. Bahraini summers are extreme. Late afternoon works well: museum first, then the fort as the light softens.

Good to know

The fort outside is a mound of layered walls rather than a standing castle, and reading it requires the museum's context - doing the site without the museum leaves most visitors puzzled. The site is exposed with no shade. Labelling is bilingual and good. It closes on some public holidays and Ramadan hours shift substantially.
