Tvrđa, the Baroque Quarter of Osijek

Tvrđa is a whole eighteenth-century town inside a fortress, built by the Habsburgs on the Drava as a planned quarter of barracks, arsenal, guardhouses and a central square, laid out in one campaign and largely unchanged since. The buildings are plain baroque in ochre and white, the streets are cobbled, and in the middle of the square stands a plague column raised in the 1720s. Much of the quarter now belongs to the university, so it has students in it rather than soldiers. The ramparts were mostly levelled in the nineteenth century, but the gates, the riverside wall and the whole grid of streets survive.

• Holy Trinity Square - the central cobbled square with its 1720s plague column and baroque facades.
• The barracks and arsenal buildings - long ochre blocks now used by the university and the museums.
• The Museum of Slavonia - regional archaeology, ethnography and city history in the old magistrate's building.
• The water gate and river wall - the surviving fortification along the Drava embankment.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are best; the Slavonian plain gets very hot in July and August and the square has no shade. Evenings bring the university crowd out onto it. Osijek's summer festivals use the quarter. Winter on the plain is grey and foggy, and much of Tvrđa closes early.

Honest expectations

Tvrđa is handsome but half-restored, with fine facades next to peeling ones and empty buildings behind several of them. Interpretation is thin and museum hours are short. Osijek is a long way from the coast and few visitors come, which means quiet streets but also limited services. Mosquitoes off the Drava wetlands are a genuine nuisance from late spring onwards.
