Trsat sits on a ridge above the Rječina gorge, watching the mouth of Rijeka's harbour. There has been a fort on the rock since Roman times; the shape you see is medieval, bought in the 1820s by the Austrian field marshal Laval Nugent, who rebuilt parts of it in romantic taste and added a neoclassical family mausoleum with stone lions in the courtyard. The result is an odd mixture that works: bare curtain walls, a Greek revival tomb, a café in the yard and a straight view down over the port cranes and out to the Kvarner islands. Below the gate stands the Trsat shrine, a Franciscan church that has drawn pilgrims for centuries.
What you actually see
- The ramparts - a walk round the walls with the harbour, cranes and Kvarner bay laid out below.
- The Nugent mausoleum - a neoclassical tomb with stone lions set inside a medieval courtyard.
- The Petar Kružić stairway - the long covered stone staircase climbing from the river to the ridge.
- The Trsat shrine - the Franciscan church and pilgrimage complex just outside the castle gate.
When to go
Spring and autumn are best for the climb, since the stairway is in full sun for much of its length and summer afternoons are brutal. Late afternoon gives the best light over the bay. The castle keeps shorter hours in winter and the courtyard café closes. Rijeka's carnival in February fills the city below for a fortnight.
Honest expectations
The stairway runs to several hundred steps with no shade halfway up; take the bus and walk down if the heat is on. The castle itself is small, mostly empty and lightly interpreted, so an hour covers it. Rijeka is a working port rather than a resort, and the view includes container terminals, which is either the point or a disappointment depending on taste.
Nearby
Opatija and its shoreline promenade are twenty minutes west along the coast.
