EntryFree; some facilities charged

Kozara is a low forested massif between the Sava and the Sana in the northwest, protected as a national park since 1967, and it is essentially a walking and cycling area: dense beech and pine over rounded ridges, meadows and clearings, marked trails and forest roads, with the highest point at Lisina around nine hundred metres. A hunting reserve occupies part of the park and deer, boar and mouflon are managed within it. Mrakovica at the centre has a hotel, a restaurant and the main trailheads, and a large monument stands there. Winter brings snow and a small ski operation. It is used mostly by local visitors rather than travellers.

What you actually see

  • Beech and pine forest - the woodland covering the ridges.
  • Marked trails - the walking and cycling routes from Mrakovica.
  • Meadow clearings - the open ground between the forest blocks.
  • The Lisina high point - the summit area of the massif.

When to go

May to October for walking and cycling; autumn colour in the beech is the best time. Winter brings snow and limited skiing. Spring is wet and muddy on the trails.

Honest expectations

The park is modest in scale and the terrain is gentle rather than dramatic. Facilities are concentrated at Mrakovica and limited elsewhere. Hunting takes place in part of the park. Trail marking is patchy in places.

Nearby

Prijedor lies south; the Una national park is southwest.
