Kljuc Fortress

The fortress at Kljuc stands on a rocky ridge above the town and the Sana river, a long irregular enclosure of walls and towers following the crest, recorded from the fourteenth century as a seat of the Hrvatinic family and later a royal stronghold. It is remembered as the place where Stjepan Tomasevic, the last king of Bosnia, took refuge and was captured in 1463 as the kingdom fell, an event that marks the end of medieval Bosnian statehood. The walls are ruinous but substantial, with the keep and sections of curtain standing, reached by a path up from the town, and the view runs along the Sana valley.

When to go

May to October for the climb and the views. The site is unfenced and open at any time. Low sun early or late suits the walls. Grass is high in summer.

Honest expectations

The fortress is a ruin with no interpretation, staff or facilities. The path up is steep and rough. Masonry is unstable in places. The town below has limited facilities.
