Janj Primeval Forest

The Janj forest covers around three hundred hectares near Sipovo and is one of the few stands in the Dinaric mountains never logged, with beech, fir and spruce of great age standing alongside dead and fallen trunks in the natural cycle that managed forest never allows, and trees exceeding fifty metres and several centuries in age. It was inscribed in 2021 as a Bosnian component of the transnational Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe, which spans eighteen countries. Access is by forest road and there is no visitor infrastructure; the reserve is strictly protected and walking is best done with a guide from the forestry authority.

When to go

May to October for access; autumn colour in the beech is the best time. Forest roads are difficult in wet conditions and closed in snow. Guided access should be arranged in advance.

Before you go

There is no visitor centre, marked trail or signage. Access roads are rough and need a capable vehicle. The reserve is strictly protected and entry without arrangement is discouraged. Ticks are a real concern in summer.
