Krupa na Vrbasu

The Krupa joins the Vrbas south of Banja Luka after running down a short valley over travertine, and the last stretch before the confluence comes down in a series of low wide steps with water spreading over moss and tufa. Beside them stand a group of small wooden watermills, mlinovi, built over the channels on stilts, several still with their machinery, which is the image the place is known for. A medieval fortress site and the Krupa monastery, with a church of the thirteenth century rebuilt since, stand nearby. The valley is used for picnics and short walks and is a standard excursion from Banja Luka.

When to go

April to October for the walking; flow is strongest in spring. Weekends bring visitors from Banja Luka. Autumn colours the valley. Winter is wet and the paths muddy.

Good to know

The falls are low and wide rather than dramatic. The mills are small and several are derelict. Facilities are limited to a couple of restaurants. Weekend crowding and litter are a problem.
