Great Fort George occupies the top of Monks Hill above Falmouth Harbour, begun in the 1680s as a place of refuge for the island's population rather than a coastal battery, with walls enclosing a large area, a magazine, cisterns and the remains of barracks. It was never attacked. The track up is rough and the site is unrestored and overgrown in places, with the view running over both Falmouth and English Harbour below.

When to go
December to April is the dry season and the track is more passable. The climb is hot with no shade. Morning is coolest.
Honest expectations
The track needs four-wheel drive or a hot walk. The site is unrestored, overgrown and has no interpretation. There is no shade at the top.
