Nonsuch Bay on Antigua's eastern side is enclosed by a reef running across its mouth, which makes a large area of flat water in the middle of the windiest coast, and that combination has made it the island's main sailing and kitesurfing ground. Green Island sits inside the bay, privately held with beaches on several sides, and boats run out to it. Turtles feed on the seagrass and the reef edge is snorkelled.

What you actually see

  • The enclosed bay - flat water held inside the reef on a windy coast.
  • Green Island - the private island inside the bay with beaches on several sides.
  • The kitesurfing - the trade wind used across the protected water.
  • The reef edge - snorkelling where the barrier meets the open sea.

When to go

December to April has the steadiest trade wind and the driest weather. Sailing and kiting are best then. Hurricane season runs June to November.

Honest expectations

Green Island is private and access is by arranged boat only. There are no facilities on it. Kite traffic and swimmers share the bay.

Nearby

Long Bay is north, and Harmony Hall is on the mainland shore.
