Andorra's valleys kept their Romanesque churches because nothing much disturbed them for eight centuries, and Sant Joan de Caselles outside Canillo is the finest of the set: an eleventh-to-twelfth-century granite church with a three-storey Lombard bell tower, a timber porch, and inside - the treasure - a Romanesque stucco figure of Christ from a Majestat that was found broken and hidden within the wall itself, restored and remounted against its painted backdrop. It anchors the country's Romanesque circuit along with Santa Coloma and the Meritxell sanctuary.

What you actually see

  • The Lombard tower - the slender three-storey granite belfry.
  • The stucco Christ - the rare Majestat figure recovered from the wall.
  • The painted apse fragments - the surviving medieval decoration.
  • The Romanesque circuit - Santa Coloma and the valley churches beyond.

When to go

May to October for reliable opening on the guided circuit; winter access is limited and often exterior-only. The stone glows in late afternoon light. Pair with Canillo's Roc del Quer viewpoint above.

Honest expectations

It is small and the visit is short - the point is quality, not scale, and the circuit ticket covering several churches is the sensible way to do Andorran Romanesque. Opening hours are seasonal and lunchtime closures apply. The main road passes close, so the setting is valley-domestic rather than remote.

Nearby

Canillo, the Roc del Quer skywalk and the Meritxell sanctuary.
