UNESCO World Heritage
Mana Pools spreads along the Zambezi below Kariba, where the river has left a floodplain of open glades under enormous winterthorn trees, and the light through that canopy is why photographers plan whole trips around it. UNESCO listed the area for its wildlife and wilderness, and it is one of very few parks in Africa where experienced visitors may walk unaccompanied - a privilege that shapes the entire experience. Elephants here are famous for standing on their hind legs to reach albida pods, wild dogs den in the area, and lion and leopard work the pools in the dry months as the river becomes the only water for miles.
What you actually see
- Walking safaris - guided and, for the experienced, self-guided walking.
- Standing elephants - the individuals that rear up to feed on high pods.
- The winterthorn glades - shafted light through albida forest.
- Canoe safaris - multi-day paddles down the Zambezi past hippo and elephant.
When to go
The park is generally open from around April or May to October, closing in the wet season when tracks become impassable. Game concentrates on the river through the dry months, peaking September and October, which are also the hottest.
Honest expectations
Walking unguided among lion, buffalo and elephant carries real risk and is genuinely not for beginners - most visitors should walk with a professional guide, and the park has clear rules. Access needs a proper 4x4 with recovery gear and fuel range, or a fly-in. Malaria risk is significant along the Zambezi. Facilities are minimal and self-sufficiency is expected at the public campsites.
Nearby
Lake Kariba, the Zambezi escarpment and Zambia's Lower Zambezi across the river.
