Lake Kariba

Kariba was created in the late 1950s when the Zambezi was dammed, flooding a valley and forming one of the largest reservoirs on earth. The drowned mopane forest still stands in petrified skeletons across the shallows, and sunsets behind them are the image the lake is known for. Houseboats are the classic way to experience it - drifting for days, fishing for tiger fish, watching elephant and buffalo come down to drink on the Matusadona shoreline, and sleeping on deck under enormous skies. The creation of the lake also displaced the Tonga people from the valley, a history the region carries.

When to go

The dry months from April to October bring game to the shoreline and comfortable temperatures. October is the hottest and best for concentrated wildlife. The tiger fishing tournament season falls around October. Summer rains green the shore and scatter animals inland.

Honest expectations

The lake holds a large crocodile and hippo population - swimming is genuinely dangerous and locals do not do it. Malaria risk is significant in the valley. Houseboat standards vary widely from basic to luxurious; check what is included, since crews, fuel and park fees are often extra. Water levels fluctuate substantially with drought and dam management, which affects launching and shoreline access.
