Lake Niassa

The eastern shore of Lake Malawi - Lago Niassa on this side of the border - is the lake with the volume turned down: the same clear water and cichlid-flickered boulder reefs, the same fish-eagle cries, but almost none of the development, just fishing villages threading dugouts through the dawn mirror and beaches that run empty for kilometres. Mozambique protects its waters as a partial reserve, and a handful of genuinely off-grid lodges around Cobue and Nkwichi make the case for the road (or boat, or tiny plane) less travelled - sand squeaking underfoot, kayaks to granite islets, stars doubled in the lake at night.

• Granite islet kayaking - paddling the sculpted offshore rocks.

When to go

May to October for dry weather and settled water. The Ilala ferry's Mozambican calls and lodge boat transfers set the practical rhythm - confirm schedules, which change often.

Good to know

This is deliberately hard to reach - long rough roads or arranged transfers, minimal infrastructure, cash-and-patience logistics; the emptiness is purchased with effort. Bilharzia caution applies as everywhere on the lake. Village visits run on courtesy: greetings first, photographs by permission, purchases as the best thanks.
