Bangweulu Wetlands

Bangweulu means where the water meets the sky, and the description is exact: a shallow lake and enormous seasonal floodplain in northern Zambia with horizons that dissolve into haze. It holds the world's entire population of black lechwe, an antelope found nowhere else, in herds that move across the water in thousands. It is also one of the most reliable places on earth to see the shoebill - a metre-tall grey bird with a bill like a clog and an expression of permanent disapproval - reached by canoe with local guides. The wetlands are managed in partnership with the communities who fish and farm here, and that arrangement is central to how it works.

What you actually see

When to go

Shoebill viewing works best from around May to July when water levels allow canoe access to nesting areas. Game viewing on the plains improves as water recedes from June to October. Access is very difficult in the wet season from December to April.

Honest expectations

Getting here is a serious undertaking - long rough drives or a charter flight - and facilities are limited to one camp and community campsites. Shoebill trips involve wading and poling through swamp, so expect wet feet and mud. Sightings are good but not guaranteed. Mosquitoes and malaria risk are significant. This is a place for travellers who value rarity over comfort.
