Bariloche and the Lake District

The region around Bariloche, in the northern Patagonian Andes, is Argentina's beautiful Lake District, a stunning landscape of deep-blue glacial lakes, snow-capped peaks and dense forests. Bariloche itself, set on a great lake with an alpine, Swiss-chalet air, is famous for its artisan chocolate, and is the base for scenic drives like the Route of the Seven Lakes, hiking, skiing at Cerro Catedral, and boat trips across the lakes.

December to March, the southern summer, for hiking, boating and the scenic drives; June to September for skiing. Spring and autumn are lovely and quieter, though the mountain weather is always changeable.

It is a large region best explored with a car over several days, as the highlights are scattered along scenic routes. The weather is changeable, with rain and cloud possible any time. Bariloche town itself is touristy and can be busy, especially with Argentine holidaymakers and, in season, ski crowds. The chocolate is a delicious trap.
