Corcovado National Park

Corcovado, on the remote Osa Peninsula in the far southwest, is the crown jewel of Costa Rica's national parks and one of the wildest, most pristine tracts of tropical rainforest in Central America, famously described by National Geographic as the most biologically intense place on earth. Its vast primary forest, mangroves and wild beaches shelter an astonishing density of wildlife, including all four Costa Rican monkey species, tapirs, scarlet macaws and the elusive jaguar.

When to go

December to April, the dry season, for the most reliable access and trails, as the wet season makes trails muddy and rivers hard to cross; wildlife is active year-round. It is hot and humid throughout.

Good to know

It is very remote and wild, reached only by boat, small plane or a strenuous guided trek, and a licensed guide is required to enter, so it is a serious, costly wilderness trip, not a casual visit. Facilities are basic, with simple ranger stations for overnight stays. It is hot, humid and demanding, but for genuine, dense wildlife it is unrivalled.
