Shenborn Palace

The Schonborn family, who held large estates in Transcarpathia, built this hunting palace at Chynadiyovo in 1890 in a romantic style of turrets, gables and half-timbering. The building is said to have three hundred and sixty-five windows, fifty-two rooms and twelve entrances, one for each day, week and month of the year, a conceit the guides repeat and which broadly holds. It works as a sanatorium now, so visitors see the park and the exterior rather than the rooms.

What you actually see

• The palace exterior - turrets, gables and half-timbering in the 1890 romantic style.
• The calendar conceit - 365 windows, 52 rooms and 12 entrances, by the usual count.
• The park - landscaped grounds with a lake shaped as the old Austro-Hungarian map.
• The lake - the pond in front of the building, cut to that outline.

When to go

April to October is the best for the park. The grounds are open through the year with shorter winter hours. Autumn colour in the park is good.

Honest expectations

The building is a working sanatorium and the interiors are not open to casual visitors. The park is pleasant but modest. The window-counting story is repeated as fact and is approximate.
