Lancut began as a fortified residence with earth bastions and moats, which later owners softened into gardens, and passed from the Lubomirski family to the Potockis, who filled it. What makes it unusual in Poland is that the contents largely stayed: parquet, stoves, mirrors, furniture and pictures in room after room, rather than the bare shells left in most great houses. There is a small private theatre inside the walls, a ballroom, a set of rooms decorated in a Chinese manner, and a long orangery. Behind the house, the coach houses and stables hold one of the larger carriage collections in Europe - some 130 vehicles across the historic Potocki coaches and the post-war museum collection - with harness and stable fittings in place.

What you actually see

  • The state rooms - ballroom, dining room and the Chinese apartments with original furnishings.
  • The carriage collection - well over a hundred coaches, sleighs and carts in the old coach houses.
  • The private theatre - a small eighteenth century auditorium inside the residence.
  • The park and orangery - the old bastions turned to lawns, with a long glasshouse.

When to go

May to September for the park and the glasshouse. The main interiors are seen with a guide on set departures, and summer weekends fill up, so book or arrive at opening. A long-running classical music festival is held in the rooms in May, when parts of the house close to visitors. Mondays are usually shut.

Honest expectations

The tour is guided, brisk and often in Polish only unless you have arranged otherwise, and you cannot linger in a room that interests you. Separate tickets for the house, the carriages and the icon collection add up. Photography permits cost extra. The town outside the walls is plain and there is little reason to stay after the visit.

Nearby

Rzeszow is twenty minutes west, and an eighteenth century synagogue with painted interior stands in the town.
