Rohatyn Wooden Church

The Church of the Holy Spirit at Rohatyn dates from around 1598 and is built in the Halych manner, three sections in a line with the central one raised, in horizontal logs under a shingled roof. What sets it apart is the interior: a carved and painted iconostasis of the seventeenth century that is among the finest surviving in Ukraine, kept in place with the church now run as a museum. It is one of the sixteen World Heritage wooden tserkvas.

What you actually see

• The iconostasis - a seventeenth-century carved and painted screen, exceptionally complete.
• The log structure - three sections in line with the centre raised, in horizontal timber.
• The wall paintings - surviving painted decoration inside the church.
• The shingled exterior - split timber cladding over walls and roofs.

When to go

April to October is the comfortable season. The church works as a museum with set hours and closes on some weekdays. Winter hours are shorter.

Honest expectations

Because it is a museum rather than a working church, hours are limited and it is closed on some days. Photography inside is restricted. Rohatyn town has little else for visitors.
