Pyrohovo Open-Air Museum

The museum covers around one hundred and fifty hectares of open country south of Kyiv and holds close to three hundred buildings relocated from across Ukraine: timber churches, farmsteads, windmills, forges and schools, grouped by region so that Polissia, Podillia, the Carpathians, the middle Dnipro and the south each have their own village. Several churches are seventeenth and eighteenth century. Craft demonstrations and seasonal festivals run through the warm months.

What to look for

• The regional villages - separate groups showing how each part of Ukraine built.
• The timber churches - seventeenth and eighteenth-century wooden churches relocated here.
• The windmills - a line of mills on the ridge, the museum's signature view.
• The furnished interiors - houses fitted out with tools, stoves and textiles.

When to go

May to October is the season with buildings open and craft work running. Festivals fill the site on holidays. Winter access is limited to the grounds.

What to expect

The site is very large and covering it means several hours of walking; there is little shade. Many interiors are closed outside summer. Labelling is mostly in Ukrainian.
