Haulover Plantation

Haulover on Middle Caicos is the remains of a cotton plantation established by Loyalists who came to these islands after the American Revolution, hoping to grow cotton on limestone soil that turned out not to support it for long. Stone walls, building foundations and field boundaries survive in the scrub. The venture failed within a few decades and the enslaved people brought here stayed. Several such plantations were established across Middle and North Caicos in the same period and all failed within a few decades.

When to go

December to April is the dry season and the vegetation is lower. The track in is rough. Mornings are cooler.

Honest expectations

The ruins are fragmentary and overgrown and take finding. There is no interpretation on the ground. The site's history as ground worked by enslaved people is not presented anywhere there.
