Estate Mount Washington

Estate Mount Washington in the southwest of St Croix holds one of the more complete sets of sugar works left on the island: the animal mill with its circular track, the factory building, the boiling house and the rum still, standing in scrub with a self-guided path between them. It was cleared and stabilised privately from the 1980s. The estate worked from the mid-eighteenth century until sugar failed.

What you actually see

• The boiling house - the range where the juice was reduced.
• The self-guided path - the marked route between the standing structures.

When to go

December to April is the dry season and easiest for walking the grounds. Vegetation grows back quickly after the summer rains. Mornings are cooler.

Honest expectations

The site is self-guided with limited interpretation and no staff. Structures are unstable and should not be climbed. The estate's history as ground worked by enslaved people is not presented in any depth.
