Carl Lawaetz came from Schleswig to St Croix in 1890 and bought Little La Grange in 1896, and the house his family lived in for four generations is kept as it was, with the furniture, china, farm equipment and photographs in place, and a mahogany four-poster bed made on the estate. It shows the working planter life of the post-emancipation period rather than the sugar boom that came before.

What you actually see

  • The furnished house - four generations of family possessions left in place.
  • The mahogany bed - the four-poster made on the estate itself.
  • The farm equipment - the working gear of a post-emancipation estate.
  • The grounds - the estate land around the house at Little La Grange.

When to go

December to April is the dry season and high season. The museum keeps limited days and hours. Tours are guided and run at set times.

Honest expectations

Opening days are limited and worth confirming before driving out. Visits are guided only and run to a timetable. The estate's earlier history under slavery is covered lightly.

Nearby

Frederiksted is west, and the rainforest road is north.
