Indian Cave

Indian Cave on Middle Caicos is a limestone chamber whose roof has partly collapsed, letting light down onto the floor with roots hanging through the openings, and the Lucayan people who lived on these islands before European contact used it. It sits a short walk from the road near Conch Bar, where the larger cave system runs. Bats roost in the deeper sections. The Lucayans were taken from these islands to work in Hispaniola within a few decades of contact and the population did not survive.

• The collapsed roof - the openings letting daylight into the chamber.
• The hanging roots - the growth coming down through the gaps.
• The Lucayan use - the pre-contact occupation of the cave.
• The bats - the colonies in the deeper parts.

When to go

December to April is the dry high season. The cave is accessible year round. Midday light comes down through the collapses best.

Honest expectations

The floor is uneven and slippery in places. There is no lighting or interpretation. Getting to Middle Caicos means a ferry and a drive from Providenciales.
